Former Nigeria international John Ogu has attributed the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to both administrative shortcomings and the players’ attitude.

Nigeria missed out on the tournament after a penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo national team in the African play-offs, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Speaking in an interview, Ogu criticised the structure of the Nigeria Football Federation, suggesting that those in charge lack sufficient football knowledge.

“The people running our football aren’t football-oriented; they don’t understand things about football,” he said.

He compared the situation with Cameroon national team, pointing to the leadership of Samuel Eto’o as an example of football experience at the administrative level.

Ogu also stressed that players must take responsibility, insisting that representing Nigeria should be seen as a privilege rather than a favour.

“You as a football player, if you think you are doing your country a favour, they won’t invite you,” he added, referencing situations like that of Andre Onana.

While acknowledging that the federation makes efforts, he maintained that both the governing body and the players must improve to avoid future disappointments.
