DR Congo FA election: Players oppose ex-CAF general-secretary’s bid

Tensions have escalated within Democratic Republic of Congo football following fresh controversy surrounding the upcoming leadership election of the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association (FECOFA).

A group of Congolese footballers staged a protest against the candidacy of former Confederation of African Football (CAF) Secretary General, Véron Mosengo-Omba, for the FECOFA presidency.

The crisis deepened after the players unveiled a protest banner rejecting Mosengo-Omba’s bid.

Although their identities were not disclosed, the players expressed strong opposition, stressing the need to preserve what they described as the “sovereignty” of their football administration.

Sources close to the development indicated that the protest reflects growing concerns among stakeholders about possible external influence in the federation’s electoral process.

The move marks a rare intervention by active players in football administration matters, highlighting the level of unease within the domestic game.
Mosengo-Omba, who previously held a senior administrative role at CAF, recently confirmed his intention to contest the FECOFA presidency, a decision that has generated mixed reactions across the Congolese football community.

While some stakeholders believe his continental experience could help reform the federation, critics argue that his leadership may undermine local autonomy.

With the election drawing closer, the situation remains fluid, with the possibility of further protests or official responses from FECOFA and other football authorities.
