The Director of Marketing at the Ghana Football Association, Jamil Maraby, has expressed strong confidence that the current generation of the Black Stars is poised to end the country’s long wait for continental glory by winning the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ghana, four-time African champions, have not lifted the AFCON trophy since 1982 – a drought that has weighed heavily on a nation with a proud footballing heritage. However, Maraby believes the present squad has the experience, cohesion and maturity required to reverse that narrative.
“I am very confident and feel Ghana will win the next AFCON,” he declared in an interview with Patrick Akoto on the GFA Podcast.
He pointed to the stability within the squad as a key factor behind his optimism, noting that a significant core of players has remained together over time, gaining invaluable experience on the global and continental stage.
“About 60–70 percent of the squad remains intact. Many have played in two World Cups, and some have featured in three AFCON tournaments. By 2027, they will be at their peak – around 27 to 28 years. It’s a natural cycle.”
Maraby also framed Ghana’s prospects within the broader competitive landscape of African football, suggesting that the dominance of recent champions may soon give way to a new cycle.
“Ivory Coast had their chance and took it. Senegal are at the top now, but cycles change—and Ghana will rise again.”
His confidence comes despite a challenging period for the Black Stars in recent AFCON tournaments. Over the past five years, Ghana’s performances have declined, marked by early exits, a winless campaign and the unprecedented failure to qualify for the 2025 edition.
Yet, amid these setbacks, there have been signs of resilience. The Black Stars secured qualification for a second consecutive FIFA World Cup, earning a fifth appearance on the global stage—an achievement Maraby sees as evidence of underlying progress.
He believes that with continuity, experience and strategic development, the current squad is building toward a defining moment.
