Former Black Stars midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah has opened up about his sacrifice for the Ghana national team, revealing that while he played as a left-back, it was never a role he enjoyed.

Speaking to Citi Sports, the former Juventus star emphasized that his heart always belonged in the middle of the pitch.

“I prefer playing as a playmaker; that’s my natural role,” Asamoah stated, reflecting on the tactical shifts that defined his career.

The left-back/wing-back role started at club level and was adapted by Black Stars coaches.

He admitted that the transition to the defensive line was difficult for him personally, but his professional relationship with the then-head coach was the deciding factor in his compliance.

“I didn’t enjoy left-back, but I respected Kwesi Appiah,” he added.

This tactical discipline eventually paid dividends on the world’s biggest stage. Asamoah noted that staying in that role directly facilitated one of Ghana’s most memorable goals.

“It led to my assist for Asamoah Gyan,” he recalled, referring to the stunning outside-of-the-foot cross he delivered against Portugal during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

While he was often deployed as a wing-back at Juventus under Antonio Conte, many fans felt his creative talents were wasted in defense for the Black Stars.
